Tip: A URL (Universal Resource Locator) is different from a domain
name in that it also indicates information on the protocol used by a
web browser to contact that address, such as http://
www.sierrawireless.com. www.sierrawireless.com is a fully qualified
domain name, but the http://, the protocol identifier, is what makes the
whole thing a URL.
Dynamic Names
WhenanIPaddressisnotexpectedtochange,theDNSserver
canindicatetoallqueriesthattheaddresscanbecachedand
notlookedupforalongperiodoftime.DynamicDNSservers,
conversely,haveashortcachingperiodforthedomaininfor
‐
mationtopreventotherInternetsitesorqueriesfromusingthe
oldinformation.SincetheIPaddressofamodemwitha
dynamicaccountcanchangefrequently,iftheoldinformation
wasused(suchaswithaDNSserverwhichindicatesthe
addresscanbecachedforalongperiodof
time)whentheIP
addresschanged,thedomainwouldnolongerpointtothe
newandcorrectIPaddressofthemodem.
IfyourRavenXEisconfiguredforDynamicIP,whenitfirst
connectstotheInternet,itsendsaIPchangenotificationtoIP
Manager.IPManagerwillacknowledgethechangeand
updatetheDynamicDNS server.ThenewIPaddresswillthen
betheaddressforyourmodem’sconfiguredname.
Onceyourmodem’sIPaddresshasbeenupda tedinIP
Manager,itcanbecontactedvianame.IftheIPaddressis
needed,youcan usethedomainnametodeterminetheIP
address.
